LINCOLN, NEB.—Bidding for its first tourney win of the season, the Central College women's golf team grabbed a comfortable first-round lead at the 36-hole Prairie Wolves Invitational hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan University Saturday.
The Dutch shot 322 with Nebraska Wesleyan, St. Mary (Neb.) and Concordia (Neb.) well back at 357 in the five-team field.
Madison Clark (junior, Bloomington, Ill., Central Catholic HS) stands third individually with 77 at the par-70 Mahoney Golf Course. Madison Jackson of Nebraska Wesleyan leads with 74.
"She didn't have the greatest front nine," coach
Tabitha Schumacher said. "She didn't hit a ton of greens but on the back, she turned it around with three birdies."
Delaney Underwood (junior, Mitchellville, Colfax-Mingo HS) is tied for fifth at 80 with
Thea Lunning (junior, Mason City) at 81,
Mackenzie Biggs (sophomore, Bloomington, Ill., Normal HS) at 84 and
Avery Woods (sophomore, Long Grove, North Scott HS) at 91.
At-large entrant
Peyton Bytnar (sophomore, Bettendorf) is also tied for fifth at 80 while
Whitney Anderson (junior, Sioux Rapids, Sioux Central HS) shot 92 and
Rachel Sohn (sophomore, Sutherland, South O'Brien HS) had 94.
"It was a little windy today and the course was playing a little long," Schumacher said. "There were two par-4's that were 390 and 395 (yards) so that's pretty long for our players and the greens aren't the easiest. We left some strokes out there but overall we didn't have too bad of a score. I'm proud of how they did."
Schumacher noted that Iowa Western was a pre-tourney favorite but had to pull out due to illnesses on the team.
"It might have looked a little different with them there," she said.
The tourney concludes Sunday.
White team victorious—Central's second unit, the White team, prevailed in a seven-team field of varsity opponents at the Simpson Invitational Wednesday at Indianola. The Dutch posted 348 to top Simpson College by six shots. Bytnar tied for second individually with 82 at the par-71 Indianola Country Club while Sohn shared fourth at 83.
