NORMAL, ILL.—Rebounding from a bumpy opening nine holes, the Central College women's golf team closed in 12th in a high-powered 20-team field at the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic Saturday.
The Dutch recorded nine scores of double-bogey or worse in the first nine holes before regaining their footing. Central shot 325-329—654. No. 24-rated Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.) won the tourney at 306-296—602 with Denison University (Ohio) at 310-297—607, Grinnell College at 306-311—617 and No. 11 Illinois Wesleyan University at 309-310—619. Central was the only American Rivers Conference school in the field.
"We had a little bit of a rough start," coach
Tabitha Schumacher said. "Overall, we finished pretty well, so I was pleased with that."
Thea Lunning (junior, Mason City) had the day's best round for the Dutch and finished at 80-79—159.
"She played well," Schumacher said. "She hit more fairways today, which is always a plus."
Mackenzie Biggs (sophomore, Bloomington, Ill., Normal HS) was Central's top finisher at 75-81—156, tying for 22nd place.
Delaney Underwood (junior, Mitchellville, Colfax-Mingo HS) shot 85-84—169,
Avery Woods (sophomore, Long Grove, North Scott HS) had 85-85—170 and
Madison Clark (junior, Bloomington, Ill., Central Catholic HS) shot 87-85—174.
Central travels to Lincoln, Nebraska next Saturday and Sunday for the Nebraska Wesleyan Fall Classic at the Mahoney Golf Course. It will be the squad's first appearance at the course.
"That's my goal this week, to take a look and see what I can find out about the course," Schumacher said. "I've never seen it before."
