Box Score SIOUX CITY — Rattling off four wins, the Central College women's tennis tandem of
Alyssa Lewton (senior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) and
Maddie Hartley (senior, Clarinda) won the A-Flight doubles at the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships. Saturday.
Lewton and 2020 graduate
Karleigh Schilling won the previous iteration of the A-Flight doubles, making Central repeat champions. Lewton and Hartley started the day with an 8-3 victory over Sofia Sackett and Anna Olimpio of Luther College.
"They came out of the blocks fast in that match and it set the tone for the rest of the day," coah
Ryun Ferrell said.
In the second round, Lewton and Hartley won 8-0 against Emma Lassen and Jania Johnson of Coe College. They took down the No. 1 seed pairing of Anna Wanek and Emily King of Simpson College 8-6 in the semifinals.
"Simpson was playing at a high level and we were playing at a high level," Ferrell said. "It was one of the most entertaining doubles matches I've watched. It was one of those matches where it came down to who would blink fast."
They closed out the day by beating Lexi Hastings and Renata Martinez of Luther in the title match 8-3.
"It's the most consistent I've seen them play over so many matches," Ferrell said. "They played aggressive and took away what Luther did well."
Bronwyn Metcalf (senior, Pella) avenged her loss against Wartburg's Meadow LaDuke last Saturday with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the third-place match. It's the best finish for a Central player in A-Flight singles since Ferrell's arrival in 2014.
Macy Scharff (senior, Oskaloosa) became the third Central player since 2017 to win the C-Flight singles title, completing her run with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Wartburg College's Sydney Stout.

Metcalf and
Jennifer Larson (freshman, Johnston) made it to the semifinals of the B-Flight doubles bracket. Scharff and
Alli Kreider (sophomore, Norwalk) lost in the quarterfinals.
"I don't remember the last time we had this much success at this event," Ferrell said. "We came out swinging against anybody and everybody. It was fun to be part of it as a coach, to watch this team come out and do just a good job."
