RIPON, WIS.—Freshman outside hitter
Landry Luhring (Grundy Center) had double-doubles in both matches and the Central College volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Red Hawks Invitational Saturday.
Central took a five-set thriller against Ripon College (Wis.) 25-11, 20-25, 25-15, 20-25, 15-8 in the opener before falling in four sets against Carroll University (Wis.) in the finale 25-21, 25-21, 26-28, 25-22.
"While we finished .500, we are starting to get a better grove on the court," coach
Jeanne Czipri said. "We are starting to get a better system going and having better chemistry.
In the win over the Red Hawks, Luhring had 20 kills and 21 digs. She added 10 kills and 15 digs against the Pioneers.
Kayleigh Fite (sophomore, outside hitter, St. Louis, Mo., Trinity Catholic HS) also secured a double-double over the Red Hawks with 14 kills and 26 digs.
"Landry getting another double-double and Kayleigh finding her grove are things we are excited about," Czipri said. "Both are really being aggressive and creative, which is helping us find points. Their ball control and first contact is a huge bonus that we needed this year."
Setters
Chapel Carter (senior, Colorado Springs, Coronado HS) and
Alyssa Lewton (freshman, Ankeny, Centennial HS) both had stellar days. Carter had 30 and Lewton had 25 against Ripon. Both Carter and Lewton had 20 against Carroll.
"Alyssa did a great job working with Chapel in the 6-2," Czipri said. "We felt really good about the flow both setters played with."
Libero
Hannah Tripp (sophomore, Eldora, South Hardin HS) had 22 digs against Ripon and 20 against Carroll.
"Hannah is making some great plays as libero," Czipri said. "She's bringing badly needed consistency to our serve receive.
It's back to American Rivers Conference play for the Dutch next Tuesday, hosting Buena Vista University (8-3, 1-0 conference) at 7 p.m. inside P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.
"We are eager for practice Monday and our next conference battle," Czipri said.
