Central volleyball team picks up a win at Ripon tournament

RIPON, WIS.—It was a tale of two matches for the Central College volleyball team as the team split contests against Lawrence University (Wis.) and Wisconsin Lutheran College Friday on the opening day of the Ripon College Red Hawks Invitational.

Central (4-6) beat Lawrence (1-12) 20-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-17 and lost to Wisconsin Lutheran (6-5) 25-22, 25-19, 25-20.

"There's a lot to be happy about and frustrated about today," coach Jeanne Czipri said. "Our first contact, both serve receive and defense, was better than earlier this week. Defensively, we looked crisper and more disciplined."

In the win over the Vikings, three Central hitters were in double figures for kills. Outside hitter Kayleigh Fite (sophomore, St. Louis, Mo. Trinity Catholic HS) led the way with 17 kills. Landry Luhring (freshman, outside hitter, Grundy Center) had 15 and Erin Dilger (junior, middle hitter, Tinley Park, Ill., Lincoln-Way North HS) had 13.

Luhring was one of three players to have six kills against the Warriors.

"I'm happy with how some of our hitters performed against Lawrence," Czipri said. "We did an excellent job of mixing up our shots which helped us find points.

"Those balls weren't finding the court against Wisconsin Lutheran. We had way too many unforced errors."

Fite also had 17 digs against Lawrence.

The setter duo of Chapel Carter (senior, Colorado Springs, Coronado HS) and Alyssa Lewton (freshman, Ankeny, Centennial HS) had 42 and 24 assists, respectively.

Complete statistics were not available following the matches.

For day two of the Red Hawks Invitational, Central will face the hosts from Ripon College at 10 a.m. and then finish the day against Carroll University (Wis.) at noon.
