Coppage deals Central to baseball win

PELLA — Central College pitcher Billy Coppage (West Point, Fort Madison HS) threw seven innings, allowing four hits, striking out three batters and walking one on the way to his second win of the season in a 2-1 victory over Luther College Tuesday.

"Feels great to get the win today and get the series sweep," said coach Matt Schirm. "Billy was outstanding today and carved up their hitters. He threw all of his pitches for strikes and kept them off balance."

Central (13-12 overall, 5-4 Iowa Conference) grabbed a one-run lead after freshman catcher Trevor Kimm (Urbandale) scored on a single from senior outfielder Seth Griffiths (Ottumwa).

The Dutch added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh by way of the same combo, Griffiths singling in Kimm.

Griffiths finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Kimm went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Kimm has been a thorn in the side of Luther (12-11 overall, 5-7 Iowa Conference) totaling six hits in seven at-bats.

"Seth really battled today with all of his at-bats," said Schirm. "He was down in the count and didn't try to do too much and served it into the outfield. Trevor's played really well of late and continues to keep working hard."

Senior outfielder Jacob Hirst (Davenport, Assumption HS) went 2-for-2 and reached base via a walk and senior third baseman Zach Brown (Cedar Rapids, Xavier HS) went 1-for-3 with a single.

"Jake got a good bunt down for a hit and he's been working on that ever since he's been here, Jake's so fast that if he gets a good one down he's going to beat it out," said Schirm.

Freshman righty Zach Edwards (Des Moines, Lincoln HS) recorded a six-out save, allowing one run, giving up four hits and striking out one Norse hitter.

After an early conference season sweep from the University of Dubuque, Central has won five of its last six league games, including the three-game series sweep over Luther.

"Our guys are playing with so much confidence right now," said Schirm. "After the early season sweep against Dubuque, we've been playing really in all three phases of the game."

The Dutch continue league play at Buena Vista for a three-game series with the opener Friday at 6 p.m. with the final two games beginning Saturday at 1 p.m.

"Buena Vista is a very talented team, especially on the mound but we need to keep just doing out thing and be really focused on ourselves I really like our chances," said Schirm.
