Central baseball team extends winning streak to four

Storm Lake — After weather forced the Central College and Buena Vista baseball series to be rescheduled to a Sunday-Monday series, the Dutch pounced on the Beavers 10-1 Sunday evening, taking the first of the three-game Iowa Conference series.

A former conference pitcher of the year has returned to form.

The 2015 Iowa Conference Pitcher of the Year, junior righty Dylan Diveney (Marshalltown) missed most of the 2016 season due to Tommy John surgery, Diveney earned his first win since the operation, throwing five shutout innings, striking out eight and giving up two hits.

Senior pitcher Blake Judkins (Marshalltown) returned to the mound for the first time since March 4 and struck out all three batters he faced.

Freshman reliever Zach Edwards (Des Moines, Lincoln HS) earned his second save of the season, throwing three innings, allowing one hit, surrendering one run and striking out two.

The Dutch (14-12 overall, 6-4 conference) offense rallied around the former award-winning pitcher, scoring a run in the third inning, four runs in the fourth inning and then blowing the game open with three more runs in the sixth.

Sophomore shortstop Garrett Saunders (Bonaparte, Van Buren HS) led the charge with two hits in three at-bats, including a two-run home run in the sixth, senior outfielder Seth Griffiths (Ottumwa) went 2-for-4 with a walk and batted in a run and senior designated hitter Michael Reuter (Monticello) went 2-for-5 with a double.

Central outhit Buena Vista (16-9 overall, 7-3 conference) 11-3.

The Dutch have won 9 of their last 10 games.

A doubleheader between the two teams begins at Noon Monday at Storm Lake. Central travels to Nebraska Wesleyan following the game for a nine-inning game Tuesday at Lincoln, Neb.
