Late lead slips away from Dutch baseball team

Storm Lake — The Central College baseball team dropped a doubleheader with Iowa Conference foe Buena Vista Monday 5-1 and 6-5 (11 innings).

Central (14-14, 6-6 conference) held a 5-2 lead heading into the ninth inning of game two, before Buena Vista (18-9 overall, 9-3 conference) scored three runs and added the winning run in the 11th.

Sophomore pitcher Charlie Palmer (Chariton) started game two, throwing 6.2 innings, allowing five hits, surrendering two runs and striking out five.

"Charlie looked really good again today," said coach Matt Schirm. "He has made an adjustment with his pace and it seems to be working for him."

Freshman righty Nicholas Long (Marshalltown, East Marshall HS) threw six innings during game one, surrendering four runs, including three earned runs, walking two and striking out a pair.

Senior third baseman Zach Brown (Cedar Rapids, Xavier HS) went 4-for-9 on the day with two doubles, a triple and an RBI.

"Zach is seeing the ball really well right now," said Schirm. "Even the outs he made were hit hard."

Senior backstop Michael Reuter (Monticello) hit his second home run of the season, a two-run bomb to left, in game two.

"Mike got a hanging breaking ball that he smoked over the left-field wall," said Schirm.

There's no rest for the Dutch. Central travels straight to Lincoln, Neb. for a single nine-inning contest at Nebraska Wesleyan Tuesday, with first pitch at 3 p.m.

"Our guys are disappointed with not taking two-of-three from Buena Vista but I know we will bounce back like we have all season," said Schirm.
