MOUNT VERNON — Two set piece goals sparked the Central College men's soccer team to a 3-0 road win Wednesday at Cornell College as coach
Garry Laidlaw reached a milestone victory.
Central's (4-2-1) victory also marked the 250th for Laidlaw in his 29th season with the team. He has a career record of 250-226-34 (.524).
The Dutch broke a scoreless tie with 25 seconds left in the first half.
Teddy Apostolopoulos's (junior, Pella) free kick found the head of
Fernando Reyes (junior, Storm Lake) for the game's first goal.
Central added another goal off a freekick when
Marcos Cavalcanti de Albuquerque (sophomore, Cambridge, England, Impington Imperial College) assisted
Nathan Scholl's (junior, Grimes, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) header in the 77th minute.
Reyes tallied his second goal of the night with an unassisted effort in the 79th.
Freshman goalkeeper
Lukas Hetland (freshman, Van Meter) had five saves in his second career start to earn the shutout.
A long break awaits the Dutch, who don't play their next match until Friday, October 2 in Duluth, Minnesota against the College of Saint Scholastica.
