WHEATON, ILLINOIS — The Central College volleyball team swept Concordia University – Chicago (Ill.) before dropping a five-set thriller against Aurora University (Ill.) Saturday at the Marilyn Scribner Invitational hosted by Wheaton College.
The Dutch (8-4) cruised past the Cougars (4-7) 25-16, 25-17, 25-21 in the first match of the day. The competition level rose against the Spartans (11-2) with the Dutch coming up short 25-9, 23-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-12.
"All in all, it was a strong weekend," coach
Jeanne Czipri said. "Today's matches were two completely different styles, so it took us a bit to find our rhythm in that second match. Aurora is a strong team, and we were reminded of our ability to play some pretty great volleyball against some great competition."
In the sweep over Concordia, Outside hitter
Paige Sexton (senior, Sheridan, Ill., Serena HS) had a team-high 13 kills.
Landry Pacha (senior, Wellman, Mid-Prairie HS) led the way with 24 assists. Libero
Emily Brunson (sophomore, Marion) had 12 digs and middle hitter
Alayna Wentz (sophomore, Fort Collins, Colo., Rocky Mountain HS) was in on a pair of block assists.
Alex McNab (sophomore, Colorado Springs, Colo., Pine Creek HS) led four Dutch players with double digit kills against Aurora, notching 13.
Grace Corey (sophomore, Watertown, S.D.) had 32 assists. Outside hitter
Kinsey Drake (sophomore, Wilton) and Libero
Alexis Crowley (sophomore, Romeoville, Ill.) each had 18 digs.
Pacha and Corey had double-doubles in the loss. Corey 11 digs with her 32 assists and Pacha had 22 assists and 16 digs.
Central hosts Monmouth College (Ill.) at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
