WHEATON, ILLINOIS — Recording 121 kills between two matches, the Central College volleyball team started 2-0 at the Marilyn Scribner Invitational hosted by Wheaton College (Ill.) Friday night.
In its first match, Central (7-3) won the first two sets against the host school before dropping the third and fourth. The Dutch hung on to the 25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 23-25, 16-14 victory in a match that stretched for 2 hours and 14 minutes.
Against Saint Mary's College (Ind.), the Dutch dropped the opening set but rallied for a 19-25, 28-26, 25-22, 25-21 triumph.
"Today taught us a lot of lessons," coach
Jeanne Czipri said. "I'm proud of how we worked through some challenging moments and some great competition."
Sophia Folkerts (senior, Dike, Dike-New Hartford HS) was one of four Dutch players to record double digit kills against the Thunder, leading the way with 16.
Landry Pacha (senior, Wellman, Mid-Prairie HS) had 28 assists while
Kaitlyn Mumm (senior, Waukee, Des Moines Christian HS) was involved on six blocks and a team-high three service aces. Libero
Emily Brunson (sophomore, Marion, Linn-Mar HS) had 14 digs.
Against the Belles, Mumm paced the team with 17 kills and five more blocks.
Grace Corey (sophomore, Watertown, S.D.) had 30 assists.
Alexis Crowley (sophomore, Romeoville, lll.) had four service aces and
Alex McNab (sophomore, Colorado Springs, Colo., Pine Creek HS) had 13 digs.
"Our setters are really doing a great job of putting our hitters in some awesome situations and working hard to keep everyone involved. Defensively it was good to see our blocks come alive more after the work we've been putting in," Czipri said.
Central has two more matches in Wheaton tomorrow, starting with Concordia University – Chicago (Ill.) at 10 a.m. followed by Aurora University (Ill.) at 12:30 p.m.
