INDIANOLA — The Central College volleyball won the opening set of its season Tuesday against Bethel University (Minn.) before dropping the match 17-26, 25-23, 25-15, 25-23.
The Dutch (0-1) recorded 16 kills in the first set 36 attack attempts to take the early advantage. Central finished with 54 kills compared to just 39 for the Royals (1-0), but 28 attack errors dropped the team's attack percentage to .177.
"Offensively, we actually scored a lot of points," coach
Jeanne Czipri said. "A solid majority of the errors were the right errors we will get cleaned up."
Senior middle hitters
Sophia Folkerts (Dike, Dike-New Hartford HS) and
Kaitlyn Mumm (Waukee, Des Moines Christian HS) led the Dutch with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
Alex McNab (sophomore, outside hitter, Colorado Springs, Colo., Pine Creek HS) added nine more.
Landry Pacha (senior, setter, Wellman, Mid-Prairie HS) led the team with 20 assists and
Grace Corey (sophomore, setter Watertown, S.D.) had 16 more. Libero
Alexis Crowley (sophomore, Romeoville, Ill.) had 14 digs and two service aces.
"The areas for growth are all fixable things, and we have a lot of faith that we will work those out as the season goes," Czipri said. "We are so excited to be at home this weekend."
The Dutch make their home debut at 7 p.m. Friday against St. Catherine University (Minn.) in the Central-Grinnell Invitational.
