Central stuns No. 4 Washington University in opener

PELLA — In its final doubleheader of the regular season, the Central College softball team snagged a 4-1 win over No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.) Saturday.

Central (29-11) fell in the second game against the Bears (26-4-1) 3-2.

The Dutch wasted no time getting on the board with four runs in the opening frame Hannah Higgins (senior, third baseman, Macomb, Ill.) got the scoring started run two runs scored after she reached on an error. Two batters later, two runners scored on an Addi Starr (sophomore, first baseman, Ankeny, Centennial HS) double.

Central went scoreless the rest of the game but a dominant pitching performance from both Peyton Levine (freshman, Oswego, Ill., Yorkville HS) and Jadyn Huisman (sophomore, Treynor) made that a moot point. Levine picked up the win in 4.0 innings of work. She allowed one earned run to score on two hits and three walks. Huisman also contributed 3.0 innings to the cause, inducing eight groundouts in 11 batters faced.

Levine also worked 6.0 innings of game two, allowing three earned runs to cross on four hits and a walk.

Central scored both of its in the fifth inning, starting with Huisman RBI fielder's choice. Her pinch runner Ayla Hall (freshman, Webster, Tri-County HS) came around to score on an error following a successful steal of third base. The Dutch only had four hits in the game, including another Starr double.
