PELLA — Placing four players on the American Rivers All-Conference team for the first time since 2015, the Central College baseball team had a pair of first team honorees Tuesday.
Seniors
Brayden Sawyer (Grundy Center) and
Max Steinlage (Cedar Falls) were first team selections for the Dutch. Sawyer was chosen as a utility player and Steinlage as an outfielder.
Catcher
Dom DeLaPaz (fifth year, Davenport, West HS) and relief pitcher
Turner Williams (junior, Newton) were second team honorees. Pitcher
Jackson Torbit (sophomore, St. Louis, Mo., Webster Groves HS) and second baseman
Bryer Wiley (sophomore, Center Point-Urbana HS) received honorable mention.
Sawyer was 3-1 with a 3.90 GPA in four starts in conference play. He also had a .307 batting average with 20 RBI and four home runs. Steinlage hit .337 in 24 games, driving in 18 runs on a team-high 32 hits.
Williams made 10 bullpen appearances in the team's 24 league games. He logged 26.0 innings with four saves and 3-1 record. DeLaPaz had eight home runs and 20 RBI. He caught eight base runners attempting to steal on 16 tries.
Torbit was 2-1 on the mound in six conference starts, striking out 31 batters. Wiley hit .303 with 10 extra-base hits, including a team-high two triples.
Central finished its season 17-23 overall and 12-12 in league play during coach
Adam Carey's third season. Central made the six-team American Rivers Conference for the first time since 2019.
