CEDAR RAPIDS — Continuing with his trademark late-match heroics, Central College men's wrestler
Cade Siebrecht (senior, Lisbon) captured the NCAA Division III 149-pound crown with a takedown in the waning seconds of Saturday's title bout against Dominik Mallinder of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Siebrecht was joined by teammate
Pierre Baldwin (senior, 141 pounds, Carol Stream, Ill., West Chicago HS) as an All-American as Baldwin finished in third place. It's the first time since 2017 Central has had two wrestlers finish on the All-American podium.
In the championship match, Siebrecht and Mallinder exchanged escapes and were tied at 1-1 as time was running out in the match. Siebrecht countered Mallinder's takedown attempt and secured the three points himself with 10 seconds remaining for the win and national title.
Siebrecht's title run featured 20 total points and his 4-1 win in the title bout was his largest margin of victory. In his semifinal against No. 2 Matt Randolph of Augsburg University (Minn.), Siebrecht won 6-5 in overtime. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Siebrecht gave up a penalty point and an escape to fall behind 5-3 but secured a takedown with five seconds in the second overtime for the win.
Baldwin went 3-0 Saturday, stringing together decisions against Cole Becker of Augsburg University (Minn.) 8-3, No. 4 Vincent Santaiello of The College of New Jersey 4-2, No. 2 Nico Diaz of Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.), 8-6). He finishes his career at Central with 116 wins, the third most in program history.
Siebrecht becomes just the fourth Dutch wrestler to stand atop the podium at the NCAA Division III Championships, joining Tim Hackel (1987 – 126 pounds), Chad Beck (1991 – 126 pounds) and Jon McGovern (1991 and 1992 – 167 pounds).
