STORM LAKE — Breaking through in the 21st minute with an opening goal, the Central College women's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 win over Buena Vista University Tuesday.
Central (12-1-1) entered Wednesday's contest averaging nearly 3.5 goals per game. Buena Vista held off the Dutch for 20 minutes before
Josie Newton (senior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) broke the ice with her fourth goal of the season.
The Dutch bagged four goals before the halftime break as
Olivia DeVos (junior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) tallied her 15
th of the season while
Emma Klosterman (junior, Aurora, Ill., Oswego East HS) and
Sophie Caniglia (junior, Honey Creek, Missouri Valley HS) each had their first of the season.
Central added three more goals in the second half as
Lila Gwyn (freshman, Cincinnati, Ohio, Sycamore HS), Sami Anderson (sophomore, Urbandale, Des Moines Christian HS) and
Finley Baker (freshman, West Chester, Oho, Saint Ursula Academy) each added a score.
"We played a complete game today," coach Mike Kobylinsi said. "It was nice to qualify for the league tournament already prior to the match with three games left and today we built on that momentum with seven different goal scorers and another shutout in a comprehensive win."
It was a reunion of sorts for Klosterman who had a goal and an assist against the school her dad was the head coach of from 2002 to 2006.
The Dutch have now won 17 in row against the Beavers and haven't yielded a goal in the series since 2017.
Central travels to Loras College for a 5 p.m. match Saturday. The Duhawks are also unbeaten in league play at 5-0-0.
"Our record is a credit to our team spirit and belief as well as tremendous leadership," Koylinski said. "Our staff also has played a part in continuing our strong culture and consistency."
