DUBUQUE — Ending an 11-match unbeaten streak, the Central College women's soccer team lost 1-0 at Loras College Saturday.
Both Central (12-2-1, 4-1-1 American Rivers Conference) and Loras (13-1-1, 6-0-0 conference) entered the contest undefeated in league action. The two sides played a scoreless match for 73 minutes before Emily Bowe snuck a goal past Dutch goalkeeper
Zoey Sizemore (senior, Omaha, Neb., Mercy HS). Sizemore had four saves prior to the goal and finished with five total.
"We have battled all year and tonight was no different," coach
Mike Kobylinski said. "Two of the top teams in the region and in the conference went head-to-head tonight."
The Dutch had seven total shot attempts, including three on frame by
Rylee Rustad (senior, Gilbert, Ariz., Casteel HS). Rustad gave Central a last-ditch attempt at an equalizer in the 89th minute that was saved
"We stuck to our gameplan and had our tactics spot on tonight," Kobylinski said. "We felt we deserved a result."
Central finishes the regular season Tuesday against Simpson College at Noon. The Dutch are already guaranteed a home game to start the league's postseason tournament, but Tuesday's result will determine what seed they will earn.
"Our program is now at the stage again where we are competing for championships" Kobylinski said. "We just missed out tonight."
