PELLA— The Central College men's tennis team opened American Rivers Conferences matches with a swift 7-0 win over Simpson College.
"I was proud of the guys," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "It is always good to beat a team 7-0 and we don't take that lightly. There were a couple tough matches, but our team played tough, took care of business and played like we want to play."
The Dutch (6-10, 1-0 A-R-C) earned the doubles point winning two of the three matches.
Alex Slaymaker (sophomore, Geneseo, Ill.) and
Travis Subbert (sophomore, McKinney, Texas, North HS) won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. The freshmen duo of
Jack Briggs (Pella) and
Benny Ramker (Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) won 6-0 at No. 3.
"Our No. 2 doubles team continues to improve every match, and our No. 3 doubles team continues to impress me," said Ferrell.
Central was dominant in the singles matches, winning all six.
Ayden Fletcher (senior, Waukee) bounced back after losing the first set 7-5 to win 6-4 in the second set and 10-7 in the tiebreak.
"Fletcher played against a tough opponent, but once he was able to settle down and play the way he wanted he was able to control the match and pull out a win," Ferrell said.
The other five matches, the Dutch held Simpson (1-10, 0-1 A-R-C) to six total games in the ten sets that were played.
Briggs extended his winning streak winning streak with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2.
