LINCOLN, NEB.— The Central College men's tennis team moved to 2-0 in American Rivers Conference play as it defeated Nebraska Wesleyan 6-1.
The Dutch (7-10, 2-0 American Rivers) secured the doubles point winning two of the three matches.
Jack Briggs (freshman, Pella) and
Benny Ramker (freshman, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) extended their win streak as a duo to six matches with a 7-6 win in a tiebreak at No. 2.
Alex Slaymaker (sophomore, Geneseo, Ill.) and
Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy (sophomore, Kerrville, Texas, Tivy HS) were paired up for the first time this season and they came away with a 6-3 win at No. 3.
"It is always tough to play in Lincoln," said coach
Ryun Ferrell. "We came out flat, but then we got playing the way we wanted."
In the singles matches, Central took five out of the six matches. Three matches were won in straight sets as Briggs won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles,
AJ Wilkins (senior, Grinnell) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3, and Chedzoy won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
The Dutch had two matches reach a third set. Ramker won the first set 6-2 before losing 6-4 in the second, but he finished off his match winning 6-3 in the third set. Slaymaker won his first set 6-3 before losing 6-0 in the second. He finished his match winning in a third set tiebreak.
"Benny looked good in his first set, but he found his grove in the third set," Ferrell said. "Alex was playing tough despite not playing his best tennis, but he found a way to win."
The Dutch will play preseason A-R-C favorites Luther College Friday on the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex tennis courts at 4 p.m.
"It was a tough match with all of the travel, but I am glad we won and now we are looking forward to Luther on Friday."
