PELLA— For the first time in 11 years, the Central College men's tennis team won at No. 1 singles against Coe College.
The Dutch (8-12, 3-2 American Rivers) lost the match 6-1, but
Ayden Fletcher (senior, Waukee) picked up a 7-5, 6-1 win in his singles match.
"Ayden played his cleanest tennis of the season," said coach
Ryun Ferrell. "He saw the court really well and I was glad to see him play the way he did.
Coe (15-10, 4-1 American Rivers) earned the doubles point despite Fletcher and
AJ Wilkins (senior, Grinnell) picking up four games in their set at No. 1 doubles and
Jack Briggs (freshman, Pella) and
Benny Ramker (freshman, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) winning three games at No. 2.
All of the singles matches were straight sets, but Briggs, at No. 2, forced a tiebreak in his second set before losing 7-2.
"We tried to do to much in the doubles matches, Ferrell said. "We played simpler in the singles matches and had more chances."
The Dutch will travel to Storm Lake to take on Buena Vista University Tuesday at 4 p.m.
