Bohlen takes down Central’s heptathlon record

Hobart wins the decathlon

CRETE, NEB. — In her first crack at the heptathlon this season, Central College junior Olivia Bohlen (junior, Belle Plaine) won the John Green Combined Events at Doane University (Neb.) while overcoming a 20-year old school record Thursday.

Kale Hobart (sophomore, Mason City) was the men's decathlon champion while teammate Reid Pakkebier (senior, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) took second place.

Bohlen's total of 5,045 points erased the previous standard of 4,943 set by Raegan Schultz in 2004. She set outdoor career-best marks in the 200 meters (25.81 seconds), 800 meters (2:25.99), high jump (5 feet, 3 inches), javelin throw (117-9) and shot put (37-8).

"Olivia had a fantastic meet overall," assistant coach Aaron Fuller said. "She put together all seven events the last two days and to come away with a school record shows the hard work she has put into this."

Sophomore Sage Austin (Carlisle) finished 10th with 3,406 points. Jessica Larson (freshman, Britt, Garner-Hayfield HS) was 13th with 2,832 points.

Hobart's winning total of 6,922 points is the sixth-best decathlon total in school history. Pakkebier piled up 6,492 points.  Additionally, Gage Huyser (junior, Pella) was fourth with 6,235 points.

"Kale put together an awesome decathlon," Fuller said. "He has put a lot of hard work into learning the events and it shows. Reid has so much experience and he showed it the last two days. He had a great meet."

The rest of Central's roster is competing this weekend at either the Bryan Clay Invitational in
Azusa, Calif., the Kansas Relays in Lawrence or the Augustana Meet of Champions in Rock Island, Illinois.
