Central women’s tennis team sends six athletes to regional competition

Mahoney advanced to the second round

SAINT PETER, MINN.—The Central College women's tennis team sent six athletes to the Division III ITA Midwest Regional to compete against the top athletes in the region.  
           
The Dutch sent two women to compete in the singles tournament. Madi Whalen (junior, Kansas City, Mo., Park Hill HS) lost her match against Savannah Haugen from Macalester College 6-1, 6-0. Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney (junior, Misawa, Japan, Robert D. Edgren HS) won her first-round match against Mary Breitbach from Loras College 3-6, 7-6, 11-9. In the second round she lost to the No.1 seed Cassie Lee from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 6-0, 6-0.
           
In the doubles tournament Mahoney played with Becca Vala (senior, Omaha, Neb., Elkhorn HS) and they lost their first-round match to a duo from St. Catherine University 8-7. Whalen played with Jennifer Larson (senior, Johnston) and lost 8-6 to a team from Carthage College. Lauren Gano (sophomore, Johnston) and Emma Murphy (sophomore, Liberty) lost to a duo from Grinnell College 8-1.
           
The tournament continues tomorrow when the squad will be playing in consolation matches.
