LEXINGTON, KY.—As the weather conditions improved Sunday, so did the scoring for the Central College men's golf team at the Transylvania (Ky.) Fall Invitational.
The Dutch moved up three spots in the team standings to 15th place out of 19 teams. Central finished 36 over par in the 36-hole tournament at the par-72 University Club of Kentucky. Transylvania won the team title with a score of six under par. The tournament was suspended through 15 holes Saturday because of weather.
"We had a disastrous start to the first round Saturday," coach
Mel Blasi said. "We finished the first round strong today and then played more like we are capable of today."
Maison Brandt (freshman, Byron, Ill.) maintained Central's lowest two-round total of 70-76—146, placing 23rd.
"Maison had a great tournament," Blasi said. "He was solid from tee to green and his first-round score of two under par was a real highlight for us."
Carter Yurgae (freshman, West Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) finished 48th overall and had the strongest final round with a 73. His two-round total was 78-73—151. Senior
Kayden Pendergrass (Mount Vernon) scored 75-74—149 and finished in 38th place.
"Carter and Kayden both had solid performances," Blasi said.
Crew Klinger (freshman, Williamsburg) was 86th with a score of 91-75—166 and
Blake Wynn (junior, Milan, Ill., Sherrard HS) was 95th with 95-77--172
"We have a young group and there will be some growing pains," Blasi said. "Overall, I was proud of our effort and how we bounced back today."
Central will next play at the Firebird Fall Classic in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin hosted by Carthage University on September 9 and 10.
