Central notches men’s tennis shutout victory at Simpson

Dutch also drop home match against Grand View

INDIANOLA — The Central College men's tennis team made quick work of Simpson College in a 9-0 shellacking Tuesday afternoon.

Central (5-10, 2-1 American Rivers Conference) also had a second unit play at home against Grand View University Tuesday afternoon, taking a 6-3 loss.

Playing with five players, the Storm (1-8, 0-3 conference) gave Central forfeit wins at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.

"Simpson's a little down but they still played with a lot of heart and determination," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "The guys on the team played within themselves and some of the smartest tennis I've seen them play."

Ayden Fletcher (junior, Waukee) provided a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles.

"He beat a guy who has had some success in our league," Ferrell said. "I was very proud of the way he played smart."

At No. 4 singles, Travis Subbert (freshman, McKinney, Texas, North HS) was one of two Dutch players to win 6-0, 6-0. Alex Slaymaker (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.) was the other at No. 5.

"Travis played with himself and took care of business," Ferrell said. "It's nice when you've got good guys who are also respectful. He played hard and did an awesome job."

AJ Wilkins (junior, Grinnell), was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 2 singles while Alejo Marcon (sophomore, Resistencia, Argentina, Pella Christian HS) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. That duo won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Fletcher and Slaymaker won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Central is off for 10 days before returning to competition on Friday, April 19 against the University of Dubuque at 4 p.m.
