PELLA — With a 9-0 win over the University of Dubuque Friday night, the Central College men's tennis team confirmed its spot in the American Rivers Conference postseason tournament.
Central (6-10, 3-1 American Rivers Conference) is guaranteed at least the six seed in the tournament but with four matches to play they could climb higher.
"It's good to qualify for the tournament," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "Now we just need to pick off as many teams as we can to get the best possible seed.
"We took care of business despite it being a little windy and chilly outside. I was pleased with how we did today."
Making his conference dual debut,
Gavin Jablonski (freshman, Marshalltown) was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 6 singles.
"Gavin played well," Ferrell said. "He beat a nice, solid player who could give some people in the league trouble."
Ayden Fletcher (junior, Waukee) was a 6-2, 7-6 winner in the No. 1 singles spot.
AJ Wilkins (junior, Grinnell) won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles while
Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy (freshman, Kerrville, Texas, Tivy HS) won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3.
Travis Subbert (freshman, McKinney, Texas, North HS) won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 and
Alex Slaymaker (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5
In doubles, Wilkins and Subbert won 8-4 at No. 1. Slaymaker and Fletcher blanked their opponents 8-0 at No. 2 doubles while Chedzoy and
Alejo Marcon (sophomore, Resistencia, Argentina, Pella Christian HS) won 8-1 at No. 3
Central next faces Loras College at home on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
"We're ready to take on Loras tomorrow," Ferrell said.
