PELLA — With an 8-1 defeat of Loras College Saturday morning, the Central College men's tennis team finished off its second American Rivers Conference win of the weekend.
Central (7-10, 4-1 American Rivers Conference) has now won 30 straight matches against Loras (7-12, 2-4 conference). The Dutch also beat Dubuque 9-0 Friday night.
"It was far from our best tennis today, but it was some of our toughest tennis," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "This team just wouldn't quit, they kept fighting."
The Dutch started with another clean sweep through doubles but
AJ Wilkins (junior, Grinnell) and
Travis Subbert (freshman, McKinney, Texas, North HS) had to work hard for an 8-7 (8-6) win at the top.
"They were down 4-1 and crawled back," Ferrell said. "They even had match point against them, but they kept coming and wouldn't stop. It was fascinating to watch."
At No. 2 doubles,
Alex Slaymaker (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.) and
Ayden Fletcher (junior, Waukee) won 8-6 while
Alejo Marcon (sophomore, Resistencia, Argentina, Pella Christian HS) and
Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy (freshman, Kerrville, Texas, Tivy HS) won 8-5 at No. 3
In singles, Fletcher lost the first set but rallied for a 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) victory at No. 1
Wilkins won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 singles,
Alejo Marcon won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3, Chedzoy won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 and Subbert won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5
Central's busy stretch at home continues Monday against Buena Vista University at 4 p.m.
"We'll take Sunday off and then see if we get another win in conference to move up the standings," Ferrell said.
