DECATUR, ILL.— A stellar opening round from senior
Jacob Moffett (senior, Mount Pleasant) has the Central College men's golf team in third after 18 holes at the American Rivers Conference Championships Sunday.
Moffett's round of 72 at the par-71 Glen Oaks Country Club has him one over par and in a four-tie for first place after the first of three rounds.
"
He played a beautiful round of golf today," coach
Mel Blasi said. "He limited his mistakes and finished his round strong with two birdies in the last three holes.
Central carded 306 as a team, six shots back of Nebraska Wesleyan University's leading round of 300. Luther College is in second with 301.
"We made some big numbers that really hurt the other three scorers, including one quadruple bogey and two triple bogies," Blasi said. "It's really hard to recover from those but we kept our heads in the game."
Kayden Pendergrass (junior, Mount Vernon),
John Oltman (senior, Pella) and
Harold Dobernecker (senior, Nevada) each shot 78 and are all tied for 16th overall.
Cole McGriff (senior, Grinnell) shot an opening round of 85
Central will tee off in the third wave tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
"We have a real opportunity in front of us," Blasi said.
