Central offense excels in baseball win at Luther

Dutch blast three home runs in victory

PELLA — Piling up 14 hits, the Central College baseball team raced past Luther College for an 8-3 win Monday afternoon.

The Dutch (11-17, 5-8 American Rivers Conference) set a new season high with three home runs and the second-highest hits total in a game against the Norse (17-11, 6-6 conference).

"I was pumped with the way our guys went about their business in the box today," coach Adam Carey said. "They stuck to the plan. We didn't try to do too much, which shows growth and maturity."

Left fielder Jaden Kramer (sophomore, Cedar Falls) had a career high four hits, scoring one run and driving in another.

"It was good to see Kramer get some hits today," Carey said. "That double in his first at-bat was awesome."

Right fielder Colton DeRocher (senior, Sioux City, East HS) and designated hitter Dom DeLaPaz (junior, Davenport, West HS) each had home runs to improve their season total to seven and five, respectively. It was a solo home run from Caleb Douglass (junior, Windsor, Colo.) in the ninth inning that put an exclamation point on the victory.

"It was a missile," Carey said. "I was walking down to the bullpen and I could hear it off the bat. He got all of it."

Second baseman Logan McCoy (senior, Galva, Alta-Aurelia HS) also had three hits.

Brayden Sawyer (sophomore, Grundy Center) had another impressive outing as the starting pitcher, striking out five in seven innings with no walks and six hits. All three Norse runs came on a pair of home runs.

"It was another insanely good game from him," coach Adam Carey said. "He left a couple of pitches up but the reason those pitches didn't hurt was because he was constantly ahead in the count and there weren't runners on base from walks and hit by pitches. He threw a ton of strikes again today."

Chance Dreyer (sophomore, Davenport, Assumption HS) tossed two scoreless innings to close out the game.

Central has three games this weekend at Simpson College, starting with a 6 p.m. contest Friday night.
