Box Score 2 PELLA — The Central College baseball team ended a losing streak with a 4-0 win in Saturday's opener, but the University of Dubuque earned a split by winning game two 6-3.
Mark Kenney (sophomore, Fennimore, Wis.) went the full nine innings as the pitcher in the first game, striking out six while walking one and giving up four hits in the complete game shutout for the Dutch (10-16, 4-7 American Rivers Conference).
"It was fun to watch him compete," coach Adam Carey said. "He had full command of the zone all day and didn't really give them any good pitches to hit."
First baseman Declan O'Hare (fifth year, Los Angeles, Calif., John Marshall HS). Logan McCoy (senior, second baseman, Galva, Alta-Aurelia HS) each had two hits in the opener but it was the seventh-inning home run from catcher Dom DeLaPaz (junior, Davenport, West HS) that provided the biggest offensive spark.
"Our guys did a good job of sticking to our approach," Carey said. "We got the pitch counts higher earlier in the game today, which was a lesson we learned the hard way yesterday. We took advantage of the pitches we could hit and we hit them."
Max Steinlage (sophomore, Cedar Rapids) took the loss on the mound in game two, allowing five earns runs in .2 innings with eight hits, four strikeouts and three walks. Bryce Haessig (sophomore, Huxley, Ballard HS) allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out a pair in 4.1 innings of relief.
"We had to pitch around some traffic early in the game," Carey said. "We were able to work our way out of them early on but eventually if we keep allowing those guys on base the levee is going to break and that's what happened in the fifth inning."
McCoy again had two hits in the nightcap. Right fielder Colton DeRocher (senior, Sioux City, East HS) and third baseman Brayden Sawyer (sophomore, Grundy Center) each added an RBI to their tally. McCoy also was in the middle of several stellar defensive plays.
"He's playing with a little bit of swagger in the last week or two," Carey said. "Logan has grown up so much in the last three years and its been really rewarding to see."
The Dutch head to Decorah on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. game against Luther College.
