WAVERLY — In its final tune-up for the American Rivers Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Central College track and field teams both finished in second place at Wartburg College's Liz Wuertz Invitational Saturday.
The Dutch women scored 132 team points and Central's men put up 82 points. Wartburg College won both team titles with 227 and 251 points, respectively.
"Certain groups and certain people did well today," coach
Brandon Sturman said. "They were able to do things we were looking to do like improve seed marks. Some of our athletes looked a little tired but it could be from all the work we've put in. Hopefully when we back off the training a little this week things will improve."
Emly McMartin (freshman, Pella) ran the 60-meter dash final in a winning time of 7.94 seconds. She also finished third in the 200-meter dash in 25.96 seconds.
"She's been under 8.00 almost all year long in the 60," Sturman said. "I'm happy with her consistency but hopefully we can make strides at conference."
Olivia Bohlen (sophomore, Belle Plaine) reached a season-best tie of 9.14 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, also securing an individual title.
"That was big for Olivia," Sturman said. "She really had a breakthrough."
Men's long jumper
Kale Purcell (junior, Holton, Kan.) recorded a personal-best distance of 21 feet, 8 inches to win the event.
"It was another 10-centimeter PR for Kale," Sturman said. "That's an event we need to score points next week and today should help his confidence."
Noah Jorgenson (senior, Sidney) was the men's 800-meter run champion in 1:52.91.
"It was good for Noah to run that race because he hasn't since December," Sturman said. "It was a good chance to see where he's at speed and fitness wise. It was a confidence booster to get ready for conference."
Other event winners for Central were
Megan Johnson (senior, Parkersburg, Aplington-Parkersburg HS) in the women's mile (4:55.39), Caroline McMartin (senior, Pella) in the women's 3,000-meter run (9:57.40) and
Amber Vroman (junior, Seneca, Ill.) in the women's pole vault (11-1.75).
The American Rivers Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships are next Friday and Saturday in Dubuque.
"We're happy about where we're at," Sturman said. "Hopefully, we can continue to make improvements and get ready to go for next week."
