Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Central’s stingy defense leads to men’s basketball win

The Dutch won both games in the Nebraska Wesleyan Snyder Classic

LINCOLN, NEB.— The Central College men's basketball team has extended its winning streak to four games defeating the University of Northwestern- St. Paul (Minn.) 84-76.

The Dutch (5-2, 1-0 American Rivers) finish the Nebraska Wesleyan Snyder Classic 2-0.

"We did a nice job of getting the ball inside and we also kept shooting the ball well," said coach Joe Steinkamp. "The nice thing about this team is we have so many shooters and everyone night someone different could be hot. Today five different players made a three pointer and that is huge for us."

The squad held Northwestern-St. Paul (3-2) to 42.9% from the field and 21.4% from three-point land. Meanwhile Central shot 42-4% from the field, 37.5% from three and 25-31 from the free throw line.

Joshua Van Gorp (5th-year, Pella, Pella Christian HS) led the team once again recording a 30-point double-double in back-to-back games. He scored 30 points and collected 11 rebounds while also dishing out five assists.

Owen Schipper (freshman, Waukee) scored 15 points on 3-6 shooting from behind the three-point line. He also had two steals, one block and five rebounds.

Bradley Curren (sophomore, Harlan) was the third Central player to reach double figures scoring 10 points on 3-4 shooting including 2-3 from three-point land. He also collected six rebounds and two assists.

"I really like how our guards rebounded today," Steinkamp said. "Uecker and Curren both attacked the glass hard."

Kaleb Brand (5th-year, Mount Vernon) led the team once again with seven assists while also scoring eight points. Grant Uecker (freshman, Urbandale) scored eight points, dished out four assists, and had two steals.

"Brand filled the stat sheet again tonight," said Steinkamp. "He continues to do a little bit of everything for us on both ends of the floor."

The Dutch look to continue their winning streak Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. back in the P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium returning to conference play when they face Buena Vista University.
