Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Central men’s basketball team loses close battle with Beavers

The Dutch return to the court Saturday

PELLA— Despite collecting 19 offensive rebounds the Central College men's basketball team fell to Buena Vista University 73-71.

"It was an interesting game," said coach Joe Steinkamp. "Buena Vista played great but we (had a 17-rebound advantage) and grabbed 19 offensive rebounds, but we weren't able to convert our offensive rebounds into points."

Joshua Van Gorp (5th-year, Pella, Pella Christian HS) led all scorers with 25 points and collected his eighth double-double of the season collecting 17 rebounds.

"Buena Vista did a great job of mixing in some double teams but (Van Gorp) still had a nice game," Steinkamp said. "He creates so much attention, but he was able to get another double-double."

Kaleb Brand (5th-year, Mount Vernon) scored 13 points on 4-7 shooting while also dishing out 5 assists. Bradley Curren (sophomore, Harlan) scored 11 points while also collecting four assists. Grant Uecker (freshman, Urbandale) also reached double figures with 10 points adding three assists and six rebounds.

"It is nice to see four scorers reach double figures," Steinkamp said. "I think we got a lot of great looks throughout the game, and we like what we are doing but we need to continue to grow and get better. It is good for us to be playing these close games because the league is as close as ever and there will be more of these games this season."

As a team Central (5-3, 1-1 American Rivers) shot 41.5% from the field, and 28.6% from three-point range.

The Dutch return to the court when they host Wartburg College in the P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium Saturday at 4 p.m.
