Central women’s basketball team take down the Pioneers

The Dutch scored 31 bench points

OSHKOSH, WIS.—Led by strong bench play with 31 bench points and a strong fourth quarter, the Central College women's basketball team defeated the University of Wisconsin- Platteville 70-60.

Central (5-2) outscored the Pioneers (4-2) 22-10 in the fourth quarter.

"Our fourth quarter was huge for us," said coach Justin Weiland. "Our defense was tighter, and we communicated better. We had a higher sense of urgency and made it uncomfortable for (Wis.-Platteville). We also wore them down offensively and our shooters started to get hot and made some big threes."

Samantha Scott (senior, Davenport, North Scott HS) led the team off the bench with 15 points shooting 5-10 from three-point land.

"Scott came off of the bench and started off slow, but she kept firing and shots went down," Weiland said.

CeCe Moore (sophomore, Waterloo, West HS) also had a strong game scoring 14 points on 5-6 shooting and collecting nine rebounds. She was also strong on the defensive end blocking three shots and she had three steals.

As a team the Dutch shot 38.8% from the field, 38.5% from behind the three-point line and 22-27 from the free throw line.

"We went 11-11 in the fourth quarter from the free throw line," said Weiland. "We need to be able to close out games like that and I am proud of our women that they were able to finish strong."

Also, off the bench Jasmyn Williams (junior, Denver, Colo., Arvada West HS) scored six points while also dishing out three assists. Bailey Reding (junior, Grundy Center) and Kaitlyn Mumm (sophomore, Waukee, Des Moines Christian HS) both added five points.

"Williams had some big buckets down the stretch, and Mumm made a big three pointer while also grabbing two offensive rebounds," Weiland said. "Our women made the most of their opportunities and it was a great effort all around."

Gabby Moore (senior, Waterloo, West HS) scored nine points, Abby Johnson (senior, Ankeny) scored seven points and had four assists. Hannah Dau (senior, Paullina, South O'Brien HS) scored six points and had two steals.

The Dutch are on the road again Tuesday when they start American Rivers Conference games, and they face Simpson College at 5:30 p.m.

"We are excited to start the conference part of our schedule, and we have a good game to start," Weiland said. "It is a quick turnaround, but we need to take the momentum from today's game and compete."
