Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Central women’s basketball team falls in its first conference game

The Dutch shot above 50% from the field

INDIANOLA— The Central College women's basketball team had four scorers in double figures but fell to a sharp-shooting Simpson College team on the road 95-87.

The Dutch (5-3, 0-1 American Rivers) shot 53% from the field, 52% from three-point land, and 12-13 from the free throw line, but it was not enough to keep up with Simpson (3-2) who shot 57% from the field and 56% from three.

"I am extremely proud of our women, Simpson was unconscious shooting the ball today, but we played hard and didn't give up," said coach Justin Weiland. "Everyone that played, including our bench brought great energy and was locked in for all 40 minutes."

CeCe Moore (sophomore, Waterloo, West HS) led the squad with 21 points on 9-10 shooting. She also collected three assists, two blocks and one steal.

"CeCe is a fantastic player, she continues to grow every game which is great to see," Weiland said.

Central's bench scored 37 points led by Kaitlyn Mumm (sophomore, Waukee, Des Moines Christian HS) scored 19 points on 7-9 shooting including 5-7 from three-point land. She also collected nine rebounds. Samantha Scott (senior, Davenport, North Scott HS) added 11 points on 3-4 shooting from three.

"Scott got us going in the first half after hitting three straight threes, and it was great to see Mumm back and get hot from the outside," Weiland said.

Despite being held to only two points Abby Johnson (senior, Ankeny) led the team with five assists.

"(Simpson) focused on taking her away and it opened everything up for everyone else," Weiland said.

Emily Naughton (sophomore, Indianola) scored nine points and added two steals. Gabby Moore (senior, Waterloo, West HS) scored eight points while also adding four assists.

The Dutch will look to get their first conference win when they return Dec. 4 hosting Buena Vista University in the P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
