MOUNT VERNON— Shooting 50% from the field and 42.9% from three-point land, the Central College men's basketball team earned a big win against Cornell College 102-61.
The Dutch (2-2) held Cornell to 29.2% from the field and 22% from behind the three-point line.
"Our defense was the key to the game," said coach
Joe Steinkamp. "(Cornell) has some strong offensive players and our attention to detail on their player tendencies was really good."
Joshua Van Gorp (5th-year, Pella, Pella Christian HS) led the team in points again and collected another double-double scoring 24 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
"Van Gorp was his normal self, he dominated the paint and rebounds," Steinkamp said. "Our guys did a nice job finding him and it also led to our threes being open."
Owen Schipper (freshman, Waukee) also had a strong game scoring 22 points on 6-9 shooting from behind the three-point line, while also collecting seven rebounds and four assists.
"Schipper had a great all-around game as well," said Steinkamp. "He can really shoot the ball, and I also thought his activity level on defense was excellent."
As a team Central had 32 assists on its 39 made field goals.
Kaleb Brand (5th-year, Mount Vernon) had seven assists to lead the squad and
Bradley Curren (sophomore, Harlan) added five.
"It was a great team win," said Steinkamp. "I love how we shared the ball and our great ball movement led to a lot of open shots and our guys knocked them down."
Will Henricksen (senior, Cedar Rapids, Marion) scored 14 points off the bench shooting 4-6 from behind the three-point line and dished out two assists.
"It was great to see Hendrickson get going," Steinkamp said. "He ignited our second half run."
Grant Uecker (freshman, Urbandale) and
Nash Smith (sophomore, Adel, Van Meter HS) both made two threes and scored eight points.
The Dutch return to the court Tuesday when they open American Rivers play at Simpson College at 7:30 p.m.
"It is always exciting to play the rivalry game against Simpson," said Steinkamp. "They are really disciplined and well coached. We are going to need another 40 minutes of good basketball Tuesday night."
