Marcon leads Central men’s soccer team in win

Josh Wilson scored his second goal of the season Wednesday

PELLA— Alejo Marcon (junior, Resistencia, Argentina, Pella Christian HS) scored a goal while also picking up an assist as the Central College men's soccer team defeated Coe College 2-0 Wednesday.

"I thought it was another solid defensive effort," said coach Garry Laidlaw. "Coe posed some threats going forward, but we did well to neutralize its chances."

After a scoreless first half, the Dutch (7-6-2, 3-2-1 American Rivers) took advantage of a free kick in the 52nd minute when Josh Wilson (sophomore, Altoona, Southwest Polk HS) scored his second goal of the season. Marcon and Joe Brown (senior, Norwalk) picked up the assists.

"We got important contributions from Brown on both sides, and Wilson continues to show promise up top," Laidlaw said.

Central added on to the lead after a penalty was awarded in the 81st minute and Marcon stepped up and converted the penalty kick for his third goal of the season.

Goalkeeper Ronan Murphy (senior, Des Moines, Roosevelt) collected his fourth clean sheet of the season collecting three saves.

The Dutch outshot Coe (6-9-1, 2-4 American Rivers) 18-9 as well as shots on goal 5-4.

Laidlaw also noted the play of Nathan Scholl (freshman, Grimes, Dallas Center Grimes HS) and Grant Fletcher (freshman, Norwalk).

"They provided us with a nice boost off of the bench today," said Laidlaw.

The Dutch return to the pitch when they host Nebraska Wesleyan Saturday at 1 p.m. on the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex soccer field.

"We take no results for granted in this league and remain hungry to chase for a spot in the league tournament," Laidlaw said.
