Dutch men pick up road soccer win

Oppoent's red card gives Central advantage

ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS — Taking advantage of Augustana College going down a man late in the first half, the Central College men's soccer team were victorious 2-0 Sunday afternoon.

In the 40th minute, Dutch (3-0-1) defender Spencer Taylor (sophomore, Norwalk) launched a long through ball to Austin DeVilder (freshman, Moline, Ill., United Township HS) who was streaking down the center of the park. The Vikings goalkeeper DeVilder clipped outside of the box and was given a straight red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity.

Just four minutes later Central broke the scoreless tie on Alejo Marcon's (sophomore, Resistencia, Argentina, Pella Christian HS) goal from the right side of the box. Nathan Kuhlman (senior, Lee's Summit, Mo., North HS) was credited with an assist.

"We took advantage of the situation," coach Garry Laidlaw said. "Alejo scored a nice little cutback goal off a Kuhlman cross. We were able to settle into our game at that point.

The Dutch used a total of 25 players in the match and Laidlaw credited the bench for helping the team in two matches in two days.

"When we went to the bench in the first half, we got what we needed," Laidlaw said. "They gave us high energy and good quality play. Nick Colavita (junior, Scottsdale, Ariz., Desert Mountain HS) changed the game and Carter Newhouse (freshman, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) had a good shift. Those two and Devilder really sparked us."

In the 75th minute, Central got a second goal as Zach Holtan (freshman, Ames, Gilbert HS) scored off a Trysten Vasquez (sophomore, Cedar Rapids, Xavier HS) assist.

"It was a great cross from Trysten and Zach outjumped the goalie to convert a great header," Laidlaw said.

Goalkeeper Ronan Murphy (junior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) made his debut for Central, making one save in a 90-minute shutout.

"We have two excellent goalies," Laidlaw said. "Ronan has been a true bright spot coming in. John Foster (senior, Lee's Summit, Mo., North HS) and Ronan have both been brilliant in terms of their attitude and competition."
