PELLA— In a game with 10 total shot attempts, the Central College men's soccer team tied Dordt University 0-0 Saturday afternoon.
Central (3-0-2) held a slight 6-4 advantage on shot attempts but neither the Dutch nor the Defenders (3-3-1) were able to find the back of the net.
"In college soccer, there's going to be games where you don't get a lot of chances," coach
Garry Laidlaw said. "When you get them in a game like this you have to take them. It was a good match and neither team could find a breakthrough. Overall, I think a draw is a fair result."
Dutch goalie
John Foster (senior, Lee's Summit, Mo., North HS) made a pair of saves in 90 minutes.
"John had to come up with one really critical save and stopped a few other half chances," Laidlaw said.
The shutout is Central's third of the season.
Defenders Spencer Taylor (junior, Norwalk), Alejo Marcon (sophomore, Resistencia, Argentina, Pella Christian HS) and
Trysten Vasquez (sophomore, Cedar Rapids, Xavier HS) went the full 90 minutes.
"I thought our backs were absolutely tremendous," Laidlaw said. "All of them that played today did a superb job."
Laidlaw also cited the play of midfielder
Gabe Wilson (senior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) as being exceptional over the course of his 78 minutes.
Central hits the road to play Macalester College (Minn.) at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
