URBANDALE, IOWA — Playing at the top of the singles lineup for the first time, N
ick Scott (junior, Fort Benton, Mont., Great Falls Central Catholic HS) picked up the decisive point in Central College's 5-4 win over Northwestern College in men's tennis Saturday.
The Dutch (4-6) and Red Raiders (5-5) were tied 4-4 with just the No. 1 singles match left on the court. Scott had won the first set 7-5 but dropped the second one 7-6. He secured his match and the team match by winning the tie-breaker set 10-7.
"It was fun for him to do that," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "I thought he played well against a good Northwestern player."
Central got off to a good start in doubles, winning at both No. 2 and No. 3.
Trey Melvin (senior, Lawrence, Kan., Free State HS) and
Matthew Den Adel (senior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) won 8-3 at No. 2 and
Alejo Marco (freshman, Knoxville, Pella Christian HS) and
AJ Wilkins (sophomore, Grinnell) were victorious at No. 3 by the same score.
"That's probably as good as Trey and Matthew have ever played together," Ferrell said. "Alejo and AJ are really starting to figure some things out."
Den Adel had another 2-0 night, blanking his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
Central is slated to host Concordia University (Neb.) at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
