PELLA — In its final match before starting American Rivers Conference matches, the Central College men's tennis team lost 5-4 to Concordia University (Neb.) Tuesday.
Central (4-7) felt like they were looking into a mirror against the Bulldogs (6-5).
"Concordia is similar to us," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "We usually thrive in our depth, but they are just as deep as us. They just played a little better than us in some spots.
Trey Melvin (senior, Lawrence, Kan., Free State HS) won both of his matches against the Bulldogs, starting with 8-6 doubles win alongside
Matthew Den Adel (senior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) in the No. 2 slot. He followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles.
"He played like the senior he is," Ferrell said. "He is such an independent player and is capable of figuring things out and then executing. He has such a high standard for himself and that is what makes him so valuable to this team."
Nick Scott (junior, Fort Benton, Mont., Great Falls Central Catholic HS) won 0-6, 7 -5, 10-8 at No. 2 singles.
Ayden Fletcher (sophomore, Waukee) was victorious 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 5 hole.
Central has a week off before opening American Rivers Conference action on Wednesday, March 29 at Nebraska Wesleyan University at 4 p.m.
"We've got a week to get ready," Ferrell said. "We'll clean up some things and be prepared for conference play to start."
