Central track and field records erased in indoor opener

Distance crew stays fast after cross country season

DAVENPORT — Coming off stellar cross country seasons, four members of the Central College indoor track and field teams distance crew set new program standards at the Frigid Bee Opener hosted by St. Ambrose University Saturday.

Caroline McMartin (senior, Pella) and Megan Johnson (senior, Parkersburg, Aplington-Parkersburg HS) of the women's team ran the 5,000-meter races and Noah Jorgenson (senior, Sidney) and Adam Sylvia (senior, Rochester, Mass., Old Rochester HS) were in the men's mile. Both duos finished first and second in their respective races.

"I couldn't be more excited about the performances today," associate head coach Joe Dunham said.

McMartin improved her own mark in the 5,000-meter run by nearly 30 seconds, winning in 16 minutes, 58.90 seconds. Johnson was right behind her in second place in 17:01.49.

"They both ran extremely smart races," Dunham said. "We wanted to be aggressive today and set ourselves up for possible indoor PRs. It will be good to reset our training a little bit as we go into winter break and get ready for the indoor season."

Despite not previously being on the program's top-10 list in the mile, Jorgenson crossed the line in 4:05.18. He knocked off Sylvia's record he set last season. Sylvia also had a new personal-best time in 4:06.47.

"They executed the race plan perfectly," Dunham said. "Unfortunately, it got out a little bit slow but they didn't panic. They just moved when they needed to move and had a great last 400 meters. It tells me that there's probably more there."

The Dutch have a contingent of multi-event athletes at the Doane Happy Holidays Multi-Event this weekend in Crete, Nebraska. The majority of Central's track and field roster will compete at the Dutch Holiday Preview starting next Saturday at 11 a.m. inside H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse.
