INDIANOLA — In a rare dual meet, the Central College men's and women's track and field team ran past Simpson College Saturday.
Central won the men's dual 161-89 and triumphed in the women's dual 162-76. The Dutch won 30 of a combined 32 individual event titles.
"I was really proud of our team's attitude and mentality," coach
Brandon Sturman said. "We could have easily went into this meet worried about the weather and the fact it was only a dual. We had a positive attitude and were able to have fun and hit some big marks."
Abby Gruver (sophomore, Sully, Lynnville-Sully HS) topped the 110-meter hurdle field in 16.14 seconds.
Lauren Brown (sophomore, Underwood) was the champion in the 100 meters (13.11 seconds) and
Abbi Roerdink (sophomore, Tiffin, Ohio, Hopewell-Loudon HS) won the 200 meters (26.06 seconds).
"
Abby Gruver definitely had a great hurdle race," Sturman said. "She was able to three-step the whole thing and looked smooth. She's coming into her own this year."
Caroline McMartin (sophomore, Pella) was the winner in the 800 meters (2:22.63) and 1500 meters (4:47.39).
Hailey Hill (junior, Las Vegas, Nev., West Career & Technical Academy) gave Central the sweep in distance races by winning the 3000 meters (11:14.71)
"Caroline was able to hit some big marks on a short turnaround," Sturman said. "She ran the 800 40 minutes after the 1500 and had PRs in both races. That speaks highly of her fitness level."
High jumpers
Abigail White (freshman, Centerville),
Malory Jones (junior, Fairfield) and
Mackenie Kruse (junior, St. Clair, Minn.) tied for first after all three cleared 5-1.
"I'm happy for all of them," Sturman said. "They'd all been stuck at 1.50 meters (4-11) and they were all able to get over that next bar together."
Abby Marr (sophomore, Riceville) was the winner in the discus throw (119-9), hammer throw (148-5) and shot put (38-11.5) while
Krissa Larson (senior, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) took the javelin throw title (108-8).
Kasey Pelzer (sophomore, Pleasantville) won the long jump crown and

Nolan Reynolds (junior, Montezuma) took advantage of the favorable winds, winning the men's 100-meter dash (10.99 seconds) and 200-meter dash (21.80 seconds).
"He had a phenomenal day today," Sturman said. "He had a little help from the wind and broke the 11-second mark, which was a goal of his."
Kale Purcell (freshman, Holton, Kan.) joined the team after basketball season and got his first victory in the triple jump with a mark of 41-9.25.
"We took advantage of the smaller meet to get him six attempts and we were able to make some progress," Sturman said. "I know he wants to do better and he is a super motivated athlete. I think he can really help our team."
High jumper
Sam Beatty (junior, Mount Pleasant) cleared 6-9.75 and moved up to No. 2 nationally.
"Sam has been so consistent," Sturman said. "He used this to compare for meets like Drake Relays and the national meet where they start at a higher bar."
Theo Baldus (senior, St. Ansgar) won the discus throw (135-1) and hammer throw (162-4).
Thomas Spoehr (senior, Bennington, Neb.) topped the shot put field (46-7.5) and
