Central outlasts Nebraska Wesleyan for men’s tennis win

Den Adel clinches match in final singles pairing

LINCOLN, NEB. — The Central College men's tennis team got back in the win column Saturday afternoon by beating Nebraska Wesleyan University 5-4.

Tied at 4-4 with just the No. 5 singles match remaining, Matthew Den Adel (junior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) won in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 to clinch the match for the Dutch.

"He played a solid first set" coach Ryun Ferrell said. "His opponent caught fire in the secondset and then Matthew settled down and took care of business in the third set.

Central was without it's usual No. 1 singles player Tanner Finken (senior, Carroll), who was on a graduate school visit at the University of Arizona.

"It's great to be able to win without your top player," Ferrell said. "It's never easy to ask everybody to move up a spot but we handled it well."

Nick Scott (sophomore, Fort Benton, Mont., Great Falls Central Catholic HS) and Ayden Fletcher (freshman, Waukee) also secured singles win for the Dutch at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Scott was a 5-6, 6-3, 6-4 winner and Fletcher triumphed 7-5, 6-2.

Fletcher and Trey Melvin (junior, Lawrence, Kan., Free State HS) won 8-6 in the No. 2 doubles slot. Brad DiLeo (senior, Iowa City, West HS) and Caleb Hamerlinck (junior, Huxley, Ballard HS) took the No. 3 doubles match 8-1.

Central hosts Coe College and Buena Vista University next Saturday, starting with the Kohawks at 10a.m.

"Coe has a real shot to win the league as a senior-laden team," Ferrell said. "Buena Vista is an improving team and we'll need to be ready to go."
