Senior Day split for Dutch men’s tennis squad

Central trounces Buena Vista, shut out by Coe

PELLA — A 9-0 win over Buena Vista University highlighted Senior Day for the Central College men's tennis team Saturday afternoon.

The Dutch (7-7, 3-2 American Rivers Conference) lost 9-0 against Coe College in a morning match.

"Coe is a very old team with a lot of seniors," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "We played tough but they know how to win. We looked good against BV and snuffed out their excitement pretty fast."

Tanner Finken (senior, Carroll) gave the Dutch a 7-6 (10-3), 6-3 win at No. 1 singles against the Beavers. Brad DiLeo (senior, Iowa City, West HS) was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 3 singles.

"It was great to see them both get wins," Ferrell said. "Jacob Alden (senior, Ames, Ballard HS) also won 6-0, 6-0 in an exhibition match against Buena Vista, which was also very cool to see."

Finken and Nick Scott (sophomore, Fort Benton, Mont., Great Falls Central Catholic HS) won 8-3 at the top of the doubles lineup. DiLeo and Caleb Hamerlinck (junior, Huxley, Ballard HS) were 8-1 victors at No. 3 doubles.

"Tanner and Nick are a formidable No. 1 team," Ferrell said. "Brad and Caleb have done a great job at No. 3 doubles.

Trey Melvin (junior, Lawrence, Kan., Free State HS) won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Scott won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Ayden Fletcher (freshman, Waukee) and Matthew Den Adel (junior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) were both 6-0, 6-0 winners at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Melvin and Fletcher won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Central travels to Wartburg College Thursday for a 4 p.m. match.

"They're an improved team but I think we are, too," Ferrell said. "We'll see if we get some good weather and play outside."
