Central (5-6) used the non-conference match against an NAIA opponent to get beyond its normal starting lineup. The entire Dutch lineup was playing in new slots and a few players made their varsity dual debuts.
Michael Turnley (junior, Manhattan, Kan.),
Lucas Vroom (sophomore, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) and
Gabe Matthias (freshman, Knoxville) all played singles for the first team in
"The main reason for doing this is that we have a big team," Ferrell said. "I have some guys who work really hard and deserve an opportunity to play. I wanted to give them that opportunity today."
Even though Central did not win a match, Ferrell was pleased with what he saw from his team.
"I was impressed with how we played," Ferrell said. "I told them they needed to play as hard as they can and that's exactly what I saw. I was proud of how tough they played."
A crucial American Rivers Conference match awaits the Dutch tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska.
