Central blanks Monmouth in men’s tennis match

Dutch split neutral-site matches

IOWA CITY— The Central College men's tennis team held Monmouth College scoreless in a 9-0 victory Saturday night.

Central (2-3) lost its first match of the day against North Central College (8-1). Both matches were played on neutral sites. Central and North Central played at Coe while the Dutch played Monmouth at the University of Iowa's facility.

"Iowa has a multi-million dollar facility and its gorgeous," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "It's a great venue to play in and we had a lot of fun"

The Cardinals are 5-1 on the season and provided a stiff test for Central.

"We looked the best we've looked so far this season against North Central and I was excited about that," Ferrell said. "Against Monmouth, we took care of business and didn't give them any reason to get excited."

Brad DiLeo (senior, Iowa City, West HS) won three of his four matches on the day, going 2-0 back in his hometown. He won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles against Monmouth after an 8-0 No. 3 doubles win with Caleb Hamerlinck (junior, Huxley, Ballard HS). He also won the No. 4 singles match against North Central by an injury default.

"He thumped his opponent at No. 2 against Monmouth," Ferrell said. "He didn't give him any hope at all and did a great job. It was nice to have Brad playing at home in front of his family and friends."

Against Monmouth, Tanner Finken (senior, Carroll) and Nick Scott (sophomore, Fort Benton, Mont., Great Falls Central Catholic HS) were 8-4 winners at No. 1 doubles while Trey Melvin (junior, Lawrence, Kan., Free State HS) and Ayden Fletcher (freshman, Waukee) were 8-1 winners at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, Melvin won 6-2, 6-4 at the top of the lineup and Scott was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 3. Fletcher, Matthew Den Adel (junior, Ankeny, Centennial HS), and Jacob Alden (senior, Ames, Ballard HS) were all 6-0, 6-0 winners at Nos. 4-6, respectively.

Central plays Simpson College and Luther College on Saturday, March 5 in Indianola.
