Central splits against Storm, Norse

URBANDALE— For the 47th consecutive time since 1991, the Central College men's tennis team defeated Simpson College Saturday, this time by a 9-0 margin.

Central (3-4, 1-1 American Rivers Conference) lost its second match of the day 7-2 against Luther College.

Central won all five of six singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 win by Ayden Fletcher (freshman, Waukee) at No. 5.

"You won't find anybody who works as hard as Ayden," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "He's constantly on the court and is kind of a gym rat. He was better than his opponent and he didn't give him anything."

Trey Melvin (junior, Lawrence, Kan., Free State HS) won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Brad DiLeo (senior, Iowa City, West HS) won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Nick Scott (sophomore, Fort Benton, Mo., Great Falls Central Catholic HS) was a 6-2, 7-5 winner at No. 4 singles and Matthew Den Adel (junior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

"We played pretty solid and tough" Ferrell said. "I was very pleased with the effort one we got ourselves going."
In doubles against the Storm, Finken and Scott won 8-1 at No. 1, Fletcher and Melvin won 8-4 at No. 2 and DiLeo and Caleb Hamerlinck (junior, Huxley, Ballard HS) won 8-1 at No. 3.

Against Luther, the Dutch took two out of three doubles matches. Both the No. 2 pairing of Fletcher and Melvin and the No. 3 pairing of DiLeo and Hamerlinck were 8-6 winners.

"We've been working on doubles a lot and it showed all the work we've been putting in," Ferrell said. "It's the first time in my tenure that we've taken two doubles matches from Luther."

Central hosts St. Ambrose University next Friday at 4 p.m. and Baker University (Kan.) Saturday at noon.
