DUBUQUE — The Central College women's soccer team took No. 15 Loras College into halftime in a one-goal game before losing 3-0 in fulltime Saturday afternoon.
The Dutch (7-5-2, 1-3-1 American Rivers Conference) held the potent Duhawks (11-0-3, 5-0-0 conference) offense in check in the first half and were nearly even on shot attempts, trailing 10-9.
"We had a great account of ourselves at Loras besides the scoreline," coach
Mike Kobylinski said. "I can't remember the last time we were even on shots in a half at Loras, it's such a tough place to play."
Paige Cahill (junior, midfielder, Castle Rock, Colo., Castle View HS) and
Grace Coates (sophomore, forward, Marion, Linn-Mar HS) each had two shots on goal for the Dutch. Coates had four total shot attempts.
"We were unfortunate not to put one away the first half," Kobylinski said. "We battled and played our brand which was pleasing to see. We got in positions to score and I felt at times we pushed the tempo and that was evident by the stat line."
Goalkeeper
Sheila Horstmann (senior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) made 10 saves while facing 24 shot attempts.
"Sheila was phenomenal today," Kobylinski said. "She stood tall between the pipes."
Central travels to Buena Vista University Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match in Storm Lake.
"Our focus has shifted to Buena Vista," Kobylinski said. "After a tough result on Tuesday, we felt like we put some things together in training and I am impressed with our team responded today."
