Box Score WHITEWATER, WIS. — The Central College women's tennis team got some valuable consolation matches in at the ITA Division III Midwest Regional Saturday.
After not registering a win on the opening day of action Friday, the Dutch came out on top multiple times Saturday.
"We bounced back great today," assistant coach
Trevor Budewitz said. "We were able to win six of our 10 singles matches."
In the Consolation B Singles bracket,
Bronwyn Metcalf (senior, Pella) rattled off four straight wins to reach the semifinals. She defeated Cady Peterson (Bethel University [Minn.]) 8-2, Emily Norman (Gustavus Adolphus College [Minn.]) 8-7 (2), Michaela Pinto (Coe College) 8-2 and Ally Verbauwhede (Edgewood College [Wis.] 8-2. Her run came to end against the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire's Samantha Fuchs by an 8-3 margin.
"Bronwyn showed some really composed and veteran tennis to make it to the semifinals," Budewitz said.
Also in the B bracket
, Sarah Schirm (senior, Cedar Rapids, Xavier HS) won her first match 8-1 against Ashley Barker (Gustavus Adolphus) before losing 8-0 to Fuchs. In the A bracket,
Katie Larson (senior, Fort Madison) was an 8-5 winner against Rachel Fanciullo (Gustavus Adolphus) before losing 8-6 against Sydney Presler (Wis.-Eau Claire)
"Sarah's game has developed really nicely," Budewitz said. "The things she has been working on in practice are turning her into a well-rounded player.
"Katie fought tough and played some of her best tennis of the season."
Jennifer Larson (freshman, Johnston) lost 8-5 against Payton Buerman (St. Mary's [Minn.]) in her only action of the day.
Central travels to Dubuque for matches against Loras College and the University of Dubuque next Saturday.
