Vander Leest does it all in Central baseball win

Dutch split with Dubuque for second day

DUBUQUE — Starting pitcher Landon Vander Leest (junior, Pella) drove in three of the team's four runs in a 4-2 victory during game one of the Central College baseball team's doubleheader at the University of Dubuque Saturday.

The Spartans (10-13, 8-8 conference) beat the Dutch (8-14, 5-11 conference) 10-1 in the nightcap.

"The first game was the most complete game we've played in a while," coach Matt Schirm said. "We were clicking in all three phases. We had some bad luck that prevented us from scoring more runs."

Vander Leest, who earned a save in game one Friday, tossed the first 4.0 innings and limited the Spartans to two earned runs for the win. He went 2-for-4 at the plate to drive in three runs.

"Landon is really coming into his own offensively," Schirm said. "He's learning to lay off breaking balls out of the zone, which is helping him get in better hitting counts.

"He battled on the mound and gave us some quality innings," Schirm said.

Kyle Wright (senior, Manchester, West Delaware HS) threw the final three innings to earn a save.

"Kyle came in and slammed the door," Schirm said. "He was outstanding."

Shortstop Kyle Hauser (senior, Poplar Grove, Ill., Belvidere North HS) had three hits and two RBI in the two games.

"Kyle had a great weekend offensively," Schirm said. "it was great to see because he works so hard. He's constantly getting in extra swings. It's good to see that pay off."

Drew Coffman (sophomore, Grinnell) was the losing pitcher in game two, tossing 3.2 innings.

Central travels to Loras College next Friday for a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.

"This weekend was a step in the right direction for us," Schirm said. "We still fell short of our goal to win the series. We need to be more consistent in all areas to make it happen."
